Inova Adopts Vein Illumination to Help Improve Patient Care

Inova today announced a large-scale adoption of AccuVein vein illumination to assist with IV starts and blood draws at its five facilities. AccuVein Inc. is the global leader in vein illumination and the creator of the world’s only hand-held, non-contact vein visualization device. By broadly deploying AccuVein devices Inova, the only area hospital system to earn inclusion in the US News and World Report Best Hospitals ranking, is making vein illumination part of their standard of care.

“Optimizing the health and well-being of each individual we serve is foundational for Inova,” commented Dr. Maureen Swick, RN, PhD, SVP, Chief Nursing Executive for Inova. “Incorporation of this device enhances the course of treatment for both the health care professional and the patient, underscoring excellence in patient care.”

Studies have shown that patients prefer facilities that employ vein illumination. A study of almost 400 patients who were introduced to vein illumination, found that not only do patients want vein illumination used for all venipuncture procedures, but that they are willing to change their behavior and specifically seek out facilities that feature the technology.

Daniel Delaney, AccuVein COO said, “Inova has been recognized as a leader in quality care and their adoption of vein illumination is further evidence of their commitment to patient safety and comfort. We are proud to be their vein visualization device of choice.”

Venipuncture is the most common invasive medical procedure worldwide with an estimated 2.7 million procedures conducted every day in the United States alone. Studies show that up to one third of these attempts to access a vein fail the first time, creating unnecessary patient discomfort as well as additional costs. For these reasons health systems like Inova are making vein illumination part of their standard of care.
