AccuVein Wins Top Prize in 15th Annual Medical Design Excellence Awards Competition
Second Gold MDEA Award for Vein Illumination Leader
Long Island, NY, June 26, 2013 – AccuVein Inc., the leader in vein illumination, today announced that its AV400 vein visualization device won the 2013 Gold Medical Design Excellence Award (MDEA), one of the medical technology industry’s highest honors. AccuVein is a two time Gold winner as its AV300 also won the Gold Medical Design Excellence Award in 2010.
The highly competitive Medical Design Excellence Awards is the only awards program focused exclusively on recognizing breakthrough design work for medical products. Since 1998 it has recognized significant advances in medical product design and engineering that improve the quality of healthcare delivery and accessibility.
“We are thrilled to be a two time Gold MDEA award winner,” said AccuVein Engineering Vice President Joe Zott. “AccuVein and our skilled design partners are proud of the user intuitive nature of the AccuVein and of all that the device is doing to improve patient care around the world.”
Venipuncture for IV starts and blood draw is the most common invasive medical procedure, with 2.7 million procedures conducted every day in the United States alone. Studies show that up to one third of these attempts to access a vein fail the first time, creating unnecessary patient discomfort, as well as additional costs. By showing a map of the patient’s vasculature on the skin’s surface, The AccuVein has been shown to reduce the need for multiple needle sticks, thereby improving patient care and the time to access veins.
Other procedures benefit from vein illumination as well. In sclerotherapy procedures the AccuVein helps with vein identification and shows in real time the sclerosant traveling through the vein, confirming the procedure’s efficacy in eliminating the vein. Vein avoidance in surgery and cosmetic procedures is also an important application of the device.
